Avatar, a motion picture released by 20th Century Fox was one of the most celebrated movies in year 2009. It became an instant hit with its highly innovative cinematography and stunning visual effects. However, what made this film particularly notable is its massive budget of $250 million dollars, making it the most expensive movie ever made at that point in time. The film was produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau. Most of the production design was done by Rick Carter who had worked on films such as Avatar's predecessor "Terminator 2" and "The Abyss." In short, Avatar is a blockbuster movie with a massive budget which went straight to number one at box office release. The success of Avatar led many to believe that this particular movie may just be the game-changer in terms of technologies. For example, the 3D technology had already been around for some time before Avatar was released. It was Disney that had first pioneered it with their animated movie "Treasure Planet." But it is Avatar which has really made 3D the new frontier. Traditionally, stereo 3D technology has undergone several transformations since its early days, having gone from silvered glasses to polarized glasses and now to digital pair of glasses. It is true that there are several technical issues here according to experts like 3d director which need to be resolved before stereoscopic movies may become truly mainstream. But Avatar has definitely made it more of a possibility than ever before. Avatar was filmed using Motion-Capture technology which was developed by NASA and is used for creating computer generated graphics of aliens and other virtual characters. Cameron had used the same technology in "The Terminator" and "Aliens" movies which were also made by him. The film's CGI effects were done by the now famed James Cameron's visual effects studio Digital Domain. It is estimated that around 710 million dollars have been spent on the film's visual effects, making it the most expensive visual effects movie to be ever shot at that point in time. The movie has roughly 2500 visual effects shots which have been done by a team of around 100 people. In fact, the visual effects were so important in this film that the entire plot was based on them. The success of Avatar really makes you wonder what will be next when it comes to movies and 3D technology. In fact, there are already rumors that James Cameron is planning to film "Avatar 2" which would be released in 2012. It is not known whether he plans to bring back the stars of the first movie or not but surely he would want to use new technologies to improve upon this sci-fi blockbuster's already stellar performance at box office. Avatar has set the precedent for the future of movies and 3D technology. This is because of the high profile cast and impressive visual effects which made it a box office smash hit. But at the same time, there are several issues with this movie which need to be resolved before it is possible for stereo 3D technology to become mainstream. Avatar is a motion picture that was released on November 27, 2009 by 20th Century Fox in the United States and on December 18, 2009 in Australia by Village Roadshow Films. It was produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau. cfa1e77820
